Claire Danes, the Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning star of Showtime’s critically acclaimed series “Homeland,” fearlessly risks everything including her sanity as CIA officer Carrie Mathison, in this gripping and emotional thriller. Find out more about “Homeland,” her character and what’s to come in the next season from the actress and series producer, also known for her award-winning roles in “Temple Grandin” and “My So-Called Life.” Interviewed by New York Times culture reporter Dave Itzkoff.
Clare is Glamour’s December cover girl! She talks about her her feisty Homeland character, loving motherhood and how she fancies the pants off her husband Hugh Dancy. Plus, she gave us her views on working in a male-dominated industry.
“There are still shockingly few women who hold real positions of power in my industry,” Claire tells us exclusively. “I think because we don’t, still, have that much experience with accepting women in authoritative roles, y’know? We’re all a bit jumpy about that. I think there’s a mental leap women have to take because we’ve internalised this idea that we’re not supposed to forge the way. I think that’s changing but it’s a Catch 22: you need to see women successfully take those roles on to feel secure enough to dare attempt it yourself. The statistics are clear, there’s not [a rueful laugh] absolute parity… ”
Regardless, Claire plays the role of Carrie on the award-winning Homeland, but does she see similarities with the character she plays? “The truth is, Carrie is so dissimilar to me on basically every level,” she replied.
“I would be an abysmal CIA officer. I’m not even a political beast. I make imaginative leaps all the time. I’m very good at pretending, I guess.”
In the December issue she talks about how motherhood astounds her every day. Speaking about being a mum to little Cyrus, she said: “I love it, I love him and I’m endlessly amazed by the depths to which I do, at how involuntary and physical and profound it is. Even when he’s sleeping there’s this deep sense of responsibility. Once you make that choice, you can never un-make it and I don’t think there’s any other situation or obligation where that’s the case. It’s beautiful. And humbling.”
Naturally, Claire is missing her Homeland costar, Damian Lewis: “I miss acting with Damian, first and foremost, He is an extraordinarily gifted performer. I also miss his friendship, he’s a very bright, funny chap, who adores his wife and kids. It’s rare to find someone equally as talented as he is kind and sane.”
InStyle interviewed Claire during the special “Homeland” screening last month, and the interview has just been released. Read it below:
On her hit show Homeland, which airs its Season 4 premiere episode this Sunday, Oct. 5, on Showtime, three-time Emmy winner and four-time Golden Globe winner Claire Danes is back as whipsmart CIA Case Officer Carrie Mathison. We sat down with the star at the premiere party hosted by Showtime and Fox 21 in New York City and made her dish on everything Homeland:
Your character on the show is a new mom: How has that changed her?
She has a baby, but she hasn’t really assumed her role of motherhood—she’s still traumatized [from last season] by what happened and is not really allowing herself to grieve properly, so she’s running away. And she’s running into work, and she’s kicking ass, but is a little devoid of feeling. She’s very disconnected. She’s alarmingly high functioning. She’s too put together, which is a deviation from what we’ve seen in the past—where she’s been more erratic.
Ultimately, it will be that she has to break and she will become humanized and actually admit to these painful feelings. Right now, not so much. She’ll thaw somehow—but not for a while. That’s her trajectory.
Claire as Carrie Mathison
Post-production ― January 2018 HOMELAND is an edge-of-your-seat sensation. CIA officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) is tops in her field despite being bipolar, which makes her volatile and unpredictable. With the help of her long-time mentor Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), Carrie fearlessly risks everything, including her personal well-being and even sanity, at every turn. You won't be able to turn away from this gripping, emotional thriller in which nothing short of the fate of our nation is at stake.
Brigsby Bear (2017)
Claire as Clare Brigsby Bear Adventures is a low-budget children's TV show produced for an audience of one, James. When the show abruptly ends, James realizes that everything about his life is a lie, and he must learn to cope with the realities of a new world that he knows nothing about.
